20th Century Monochrome

XYZ Gallery have a great exhibition on at the moment called 20th Century Monochrome. It was really special to see and have a close look at real silver gelatin prints from so many legendary photographers. I loved being able to compare the printing styles of so many photographers all together like that. The prints ranged from the quick, almost rough prints from the war photographers, Adams and McCullin through to the wide tonality of Walker Evans, the deep blacks of W Eugene Smith and Marc Riboud, amazing detail from Minor White through to the absolutely sumptuous tones in Seeff’s photo of Ike and Tina Turner which was my personal favourite of the show.
Throw in works by HCB, Gordon Parks, Mary Ellen Mark and the beautiful portrait of Stravinsky by Arnold Newman and so many more gives you good reason to get on in and have a look. It’s only open until 13 October so get your skates on. See the XYZ website for details.
