Shoot, Develop & Scan

An Immersive Film Photography Workshop in the Countryside

Join us on a fun and relaxed film photography adventure in the country!  This workshop is co-hosted by District Darkroom and Lumina Labs.

Where:

Kyneton is approximately 1 hour from Melbourne either driving or by V/line.

When:

Saturday 10 May, 2025
9:00am to 5:00pm

What’s it about?

In this full-day workshop, in an intimate group (max 10 participants), you will:

  • meet fellow photographers, escape the city (lower your heart rate), and invest in your best, creative self.

  • spend the morning shooting a roll of film your way, taking advantage of historic architecture, landscape, nature, or street portrait opportunities

  • master film development techniques: choose black & white or colour (using your roll)

  • understand the process of developing film in a working film lab

  • effectively operate a professional film scanner to achieve the perfect look for your work

  • develop the ability to discuss your photography in a warm, encouraging environment.

Who is this workshop for?

People of all levels of photography. Also, for people who would like to extend their experience and stay in the area over the weekend. There are many things to do and see and Kyneton has exceptional gourmet restaurants and wineries, if that’s your thing.

What learning pathways are available?

Your film choice determines what you will learn. Each path is a guided learning experience:

  • Black and white involves mixing chemistry, loading reels, and developing film in a developing tank (and much more)

  • Colour involves preparing, loading, and developing your film in an automatic film processor, but note this is a shorter pathway.

  • It may be possible to complete two pathways, time and experience permitting.

  • Everyone gets the opportunity to scan their film using a professional Noritsu or Frontier scanner.

Who’s running the workshop

Bernie from District Darkroom and John from Lumina Labs are your experienced hosts.  Bernie runs regular workshops on black and white darkroom processes and is currently exhibiting at XYZ Photo Gallery in Melbourne. John is an established artist, most recently exhibiting at the 2023 Ballarat Biennale. He runs a Lumina Labs to support his art practice.

How much is the workshop?

$200.

Bonus for registration

  • 25% discount on colour film development and scanning services dropped on the day.

  • 25% discount on your next darkroom hire or black and white printing workshop to take your black and white negs to the next stage.

How do I get there?

  • If you’re driving, take the Calder Fwy. It’s one hour from Melbourne. On-street parking is available at the venue.

  • You can also take the V/line from Southern Cross ($10). It’s a short, leisurely 15 minute walk to the venue from the station, but we can pick you up, too, on request.
